ESG PRACTICES

Grupo telles en

At Telles Group, environmental stewardship, social responsibility and strong governance have been integral to our DNA for 177 years. Under fifth‑generation leadership, ESG isn’t an afterthought—it’s woven into every decision, every project and every community we touch.

Social & Community Impact

Our companies invest in people—both employees and neighbors—through inclusive social and educational programs:

  • Fonte da Vida e Raízes (FDC): A socio‑educational initiative in São Miguel that offers arts‑and‑environment workshops for children, teens and families.

  • Instituto de Educação Portal (IEP) Young Apprentice Program: Skills training for at‑risk youth, preparing them for careers within the Telles Group and beyond.

  • Mulheres em Ação: A free electrician‑training course empowering women in Fortaleza’s surrounding communities.

  • Partnerships with Fundação Abrinq and Associação Estação Luz further extend our support for children’s rights, inclusive education, sports and cultural projects.

Environmental management

We built a robust environmental agenda long before “sustainability” was a buzzword:

  • Curió Forest (ARIE): We preserve 57 ha of Atlantic Forest in urban Fortaleza—the state’s first Area of Relevant Ecological Interest—home to 90+ animal species. A private consortium with Naturágua, Instituto Natureza Viva and Ceará’s Environment Dept. maintains trails, educational programs and public access—welcoming 30 000 visitors in 2021–22.

  • Clean Energy: Across three solar parks in Pindoretama, Horizonte and Jaguaruana (CE), we generate 15 MW of 100% renewable power, achieving energy self‑sufficiency for Naturágua, Grupo Telles and Yplastic.

Curió Forest

A preserved environmental treasure

Fifty-seven hectares of preserved Atlantic forest in the middle of an urban area in the capital of Ceará. This is how the Telles Group keeps the Curió Forest protected, between the neighborhoods of Messejana and Curió – an area interspersed with streams and water holes where at least 92 animal species live, including mammals, birds and reptiles. The animals can be seen on the three ecological trails in the middle of the forest.

To preserve this precious ecosystem, a structure was created that promotes socialization and interaction with nature, receiving programs carried out by the Instituto Natureza Viva and the State. Administered and managed with private resources from the Telles Group and Naturágua, through the Instituto Natureza Viva and the Ceará Department of the Environment, the Curió Forest was the first Area of Relevant Ecological Interest (ARIE) recognized in the state. Between 2021 and 2022, around 30 thousand people.

National ESG Recognition

For nearly a decade we’ve partnered with Fundação Dom Cabral’s PAEX program—one of the world’s top business‑school networks—to elevate our strategic vision and management skills. In 2022, Naturágua was one of only five companies selected to pilot FDC’s ESG monitoring framework, sharing best practices to benefit Brazil’s broader business community.

Spotlight: Naturágua’s Environmental Leadership

Naturágua exemplifies our sustainability ethos:

  • Solar Park: A R$25 million, 50 000 m² photovoltaic installation in Horizonte (CE) powers its three plants—plus our Fortaleza HQ—with 5 MW of clean energy.

  • Resource Efficiency: Advanced wastewater and effluent treatment stations, plus biodegradable packaging lines.

  • Light‑Weight Bottles: A new 9 g bottle design that uses 30% less plastic.

  • Great Place to Work™: In its first GPTW Brasil assessment, Naturágua scored 83% employee satisfaction—rising 6 points year over year—and now ranks among Brazil’s Top 50 best industries to work for.

Spotlight: Santelisa’s Circular‑Economy Packaging

Since 1992, Santelisa has led Ceará in transforming 2 500 tons of cardboard scraps into 100 tons of packaging coil every day—using over 90% recycled fiber. In 2016, we installed Brazil’s largest private solar plant (Aquiraz–Pindoretama), scaling from 3 MW to 5 MW to power the factory entirely on renewables.

Best Companies to Work Award

Great Place to Work is a global consultancy focused on companies, which puts people at the center of their business strategy. The proposal is to help organizations from different sectors obtain better results through a culture of trust, high performance and innovation. GPTW recognizes, with a seal, who is on the right path.

In its first year, Naturágua won the GPTW Brasil seal. The assessment is known for its rigor and is carried out by the company’s own employees. After all, they are the ones who translate your feelings regarding corporate culture and your work routine. Impressions are collected from a questionnaire, which measures the organizational climate.

In 2021, Naturágua’s score increased by 6 percentage points compared to the previous year’s score. The satisfaction rate was 83%. In 2022, Naturágua ranked 24th in Ceará and is already among the 50 best industries to work in Brazil, occupying 46th position in the national ranking.

Santelisa, pioneering spirit and ecological commitment

Another important contribution from the Telles Group is the processing of around 2,500 tons of recycled cardboard collected monthly for the production of packaging by one of its seven companies – Santelisa. With a vigorous and active sustainability and environmental management policy, it is a pioneer in the production of packaging from recycled cardboard scraps in Ceará. With a daily production capacity of 100 tons of coils, it is also the first company in the state to obtain the Green Seal, a socio-environmental certification issued by the State Government for companies that use over 90% recycled raw materials in their products.

By maintaining such a leading role with fully sustainable production, which takes into account respect for the environment and the appreciation of human beings, Santelisa has directly contributed, since its foundation in 1992, to the preservation of the biomes of Ceará and the Northeast region and towards global CO2 reduction targets.

The packaging that leaves the factory’s production line in Aquiraz is 100% recycled from used cardboard scraps. Environmental issues, by the way, are a fundamental and permanent concern for the company. Since its inauguration, the factory, which emerged from the shortage of packaging at the end of the 80s, during a crisis in the sector, began production from sugarcane bagasse and cardboard shavings.

In 2016, the year in which an energy crisis began to emerge in Brazil, Santelisa opened the largest private solar energy plant in the country, between the municipalities of Aquiraz and Pindoretama. Its installed capacity, which was 3Mw, was later increased to 5Mw, making it self-sufficient and once again reaffirming its essence and vocation for sustainable practices with low environmental impact and ecologically responsible processes.
